Twenty eight families living with autism recently had the unique opportunity to participate in the first annual YVR Accessibility Tour for Autism at Vancouver International Airport. Vancouver Airport Authority, in partnership with Canucks Autism Network (CAN), Air Transat and Canadian Air Transport Safety Authority (CATSA), hosted a pre-flight boarding rehearsal. Families were able to practice arriving at the airport, checking in, going through security and boarding an aircraft that used engine sounds over the announcement system to simulate take-off. This unique program is designed to help families living with autism navigate the obstacles of travelling. The Airport Authority and its partners are developing new resources including a picture book and video series to give the children a more predictable routine, a sense of familiarity and ease the stress of an overwhelming environment:
